SAIL is a complete course beginning with basic boat designs, rigging and sail processes for non-sailors. It covers the physical aspects of sailing, sail applications, stability and buoyancy; marlinespike, helmsmanship, handling of more difficult sailing conditions, navigation rules, and introduction to heavy weather sailing. Included is a hands-on session on a 38 ft cruising sloop and a 14 ft daysailer.
Building on the basics of recreational boating presented in the public boating courses, seamanship adds basic information for continuing boater education. The course contents provide knowledge for the increase safe operation of recreational boats and provide the basis completion of the United States Coast Guard licensing examination. Emphasis within the course has been placed on higher-level boating skills, rules of the road, and marlinspike.
You will learn the fundamentals of safe boat handling, operation, and basic piloting in two 4-hr comprehensive classroom courses. This course meets Florida State and National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) requirements for certification. Completion of the course is accepted by most insurance companies. You will learn the basics of what you need to safely and comfortably go on the water with your boat. This comprehensive course includes lessons on seamanship, boat handling, boat types, rules of the road, navigation aids, regulations, adverse conditions, marine VHF radio, trailering and personal watercraft operation. An on-the-water session will also be held demonstrating trailer launching and retrieval; undocking, basic boat handling, anchoring and docking.
